Friday Fast Fact – OOH in New York: The State by Numbers

by Brian SchopperMarketing Manager, Geopath

For today’s Fast Fact, let’s take a look at some OOH statistics across the 62 counties of New York!

Did you know that one of the oldest forests in the world is located in New York? In 2009, scientists discovered a fossil forest in an abandoned quarry near Cairo, New York, with specimens dating back 386 million years! Until just last month, this forest was the oldest-known forest on earth; recent discoveries have pointed to a forest in southwestern England that is evidently 4 million years older.

New York state also boasts several other “oldest” and “first” records within the United States: the county’s first pizzeria, first legal brewery, oldest-running newspaper, oldest organized sporting event venue, and oldest municipal airport all call New York State home!

At the state level, Geopath audits nearly 278,000 spots, with inventory coming from 101 different operators! In the state, there is a total population of 20 million.

Here are a few great potential audience segments to be aware of in the state! Nearly 45% of residents say they drink wine, while about 1 in 3 say they drink beer.

Approximately 2/3 of the state’s population report that they have been to a Quick Service Restaurant to eat in the past 30-days, and nearly 86% report having been to a sit-down restaurant in the same time period!

In the state, 28% of people report that they have been to a professional sporting event in the past 12-months, 20% have been to a theme park, 17% to the zoo, and 13% of residents have been to a ticketed music event. Across the state, over 1/4 of people report they have purchased athletic shoes in the last 12 months, 21% have been swimming, 17% have been biking, 19% have gone hiking/backpacking, and 16% have been jogging/running.

In the coming 12 months, 31% of the population report that they have plans to go on a family vacation, and 28% plan to do some home improvement.
