Takin’ Care of Business

OOH …Here’s One Thing

Anyone else suffering from the post holiday blues as much as me?  Man is it hard to get the engine running once January rolls around.  In any event, as a New Year’s Challenge, I challenge you to listen to the following song (or even just the intro) and NOT get psyched up to get into the office:

Bachman Turner Overdrive-Taking care of business

Speaking of Challenges, I don’t know about you but I have never been much good on the New Year’s Resolutions front.  I think the best personas to kill the New Year’ Resolution thing are the ones that want a complete reboot on their lives.  I have never had the cajones or the smarts to figure out how to reboot my life.  The therapist would probably put me more in the camp of the grinder than the dreamer.  So when I stumbled on an article titled “Ditch the New Year’s Resolution for the Monthly Goals – 12 Ideas to Improve Your Career” in a recent Forbes issue (December 26, 2019), I was a little interested.  Its a quick read and I would be surprised if you didn’t get anything from the article:

The article’s concept is that rather than strive for a number of new things all year long, strive to improve one thing each month of the year.  The suggestions are pretty NSS (as in no shit Sherlock) but still good reminders for a life well lived:  attempt projects that take you out of your comfort zone, trust your gut more,  find projects that get you jazzed to work on, find time for fun, spend your physical and emotional energy wisely, force yourself to keep learning and work hard at connecting with people.

Follow Up More Regularly

Personally, for January, I am going to give the Follow Up More Regularly a try.  The article says “Most people can come up with at least 100 names of people they know but haven’t kept up with…If you reach out to only 3 people a day, you can reconnect with 90 people in one month!”  Sounds easy enough, right?  (And by the way I will be at CES next week.  If you happen to be there, would love to reconnect).

Speaking of New Year’s Resolutions, as a funny aside, I once had a friend who looked at me on January 1st, with his chin between his forefinger and his thumb (picture Rodin’s “The Thinker”), and after a long pause said, “I’ve got it.  This year my New Year’s Resolution is to buy a Jaguar XJS…in British racing green.”  Hum.  All I could say to that was “okay then”.

“You get up every morning from your alarm clock’s warning

Take the 8:15 into the city
There’s a whistle up above and people pushin’, people shovin’
And the girls who try to look pretty
And if your train’s on time, you can get to work by nine
And start your slaving job to get your pay
If you ever get annoyed, look at me I’m self-employed
I love to work at nothing all day”  (BTO)

Get after it comrades!
