Over the last few weeks, OOH Today has been discussing internally what the OOH affiliated Associations have been doing during this Coronavirus Leadership Crisis the Industry has been enduring. If you listened carefully, in a few of the most recent OOH Today podcasts, we questioned what the DPAA has been up to during the COVID-19 outbreak. It didn’t take more than one phone call to hear back from DPAA, CEO and President, Barry Frey (he’s responsive like that) to share what he and his team are up to. In typical Barry Frey fashion, his activity list is like my 4 year old grandson’s agenda visiting Six Flags; he wants to do it all. The difference between my grandson and Frey, is one runs out of gas and the other keeps stepping on it.
Barry Frey’s list of what DPAA has going is impressive at first glance and significant in study. The short list includes the Coronavirus global campaign called We Are the Countervirus and WE.DOOH seminars, that’s plural.
The big news though, are the ‘interviews’ he is hosting with CEOs, Chief Marketers and other leaders in media, advertising and marketing. One of DPAA’s missions is to connect OOH to ad leaders, connect members to each other and connect members to knowledge, tools and resources to accelerate their personal and professional learning and capabilities. More on that in a few.
Big Wheels’ Table
Nearly a month ago, I asked Barry how does the Out of Home Industry get a seat at the ‘Big Wheels’ Table’? OOH is too often, overlooked and not invited in many important meetings and decisions, the last one being the Broadcast Executives meeting with President Trump on COVID-19 a few weeks back.
So what does Frey do? He sets up a rigorous schedule of intimate video interviews of ad leaders, brands, decision makers, agency CEOs to put OOH front and center at the Big Table. He is keeping the OOH community intimate with the thinking, strategies and needs of the big spenders. It’s called, DPAA ‘SHORT CONNECTS’. Of course this was started well before our inquiry. He shared a couple of interviews with us for early screening. They are impressive and meaningful.
DPAA ‘SHORT CONNECTS’ are home grown, relatively low key conversations, where Frey speaks to Ad Industry leaders inside their homes regarding their current and future business, how all are affected by the current situation, plans for next months, thoughts on OOH and personal insights to challenges, opportunities, staffing, working from home, safety, etc. Congrats Barry Frey.
The DPAA will distribute the 10 to 12 minute full interviews to its members and make shortened versions available via social media.

DPAA Introduces ‘DPAA Short Connects’
Twice-weekly video interviews with advertising, media and marketing leaders
keep homebound ad community and DPAA members informed and engaged
NYC – DPAA, the leading global organization for all advertising and content outside the home, has introduced “DPAA Short Connects,” a series of short video interviews with advertising, media and marketing leaders aimed at keeping homebound workers informed, engaged and connected.
The execs have been interviewed at their homes via video conferencing by Barry Frey, DPAA President & CEO, as they discuss the current state of affairs in the industry, how organizations and personnel are adjusting to working remotely, and thoughts and lessons that can be applied when normal business operations resume.
Each interview runs approximately 10 minutes. Videos initially are being released exclusively to DPAA members twice weekly at noon ET, timed to lunch for east coasters, morning for those on the west coast and end of day for Western Europe. Later, shortened versions will be made available widely throughout the advertising and media community via social media.
“We want to help keep connections alive and give our members and others an opportunity to hear from the leaders of our industry,” Frey said. “It’s a great way for some of our brightest thought leaders to re-affirm the inherent strengths of the advertising and media business, deliver relevant messaging and communicate upcoming plans.”
The series’ inaugural video featured an interview with Colin Kinsella, CEO NA, Havas Media.

DPAA has been at the forefront of addressing issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The organization, in collaboration with independent ad agency Madwell, recently launched a “We Are the Countervirus” PSA campaign on out-of-home screens in the U.S., Canada, U.K., EMEA, Asia and additional parts of the globe. The campaign harnesses the power of digital OOH on a global scale plus WHO and CDC messaging in an impactful fashion to share information on slowing the spread of COVID-19 by providing actionable, clear steps to #flatteningthecurve.
Additionally, DPAA has opened its WE.DOOH (Women’s Empowerment in Digital Out-of-Home) webinars and online activities to non-members of DPAA for the duration of the pandemic crisis.
WE.DOOH, launched in 2018, is a network that unites women working across the digital out-of-home ecosystem. Partnering with Advance Women at Work, WE.DOOH runs webinars, training sessions and releases videos with helpful tips for women in the workplace. The next WE.DOOH webinar is scheduled for April 28.
