OOH …Here’s One Thing

by Jim Johnsen,
Managing Director, Johnsen, Fretty & Company

So I am driving to an early morning paddle match this morning thinking, “what nonsense am I going to spill on the page for OOH Today this week?”  And then “Stairway to Heaven” comes on.  If you are somewhere in my age bracket, that song got worn down to a nub long long ago.  But to hear it after a long hiatus, my God, it might be one of the absolute best rock songs of all time.  And I do mean all time. So rather than push out useless dribble, here it is.  Take a minute (actually 8), tune everything else out and just listen.  (And also take note of the F&K bulletin display at 2:03).

Whether you are young or old…tell me that is not one of the best things you have ever heard!

“There’s a sign on the wall

But she wants to be sure

‘Cause you know, sometimes words have two meanings

In a tree by the brook

There’s a songbird who sings

Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven”  Led Zeppelin

Beyond the incredible musicality of this song and its title of course, what makes it so good is the fact that it is a vague allegory subject to ginormous interpretation.  Don’t believe me?  Read this, with careful attention to the comments from readers.  Some believe it’s about religion, some about the worship of money, some about drug addiction, some about an Englishman’s opinion about American imperialism (ironic, no?), and some about the Lord of the Rings.  Maybe it’s all of those things and none at all.  But that’s what makes it so magically delicious.

On a heavier note, not sure if you saw the news a few days back, but it looks like the FTC is looking to eradicate employee non-competes.  That could have some interesting…ehem…implications to the outdoor advertising ecosystem if it actually gets passed!

Fact Sheet: FTC Proposes Rule to Ban Noncompete Clauses, Which Hurt Workers and Harm Competition

And now on a lighter note, not sure how I stumbled on these old adverts…but holy shitake… culture has advanced for the better after all!
