“And they say there’s a heaven for those who will wait
And some say it’s better, but I say it ain’t
I’d rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints
The sinners are much more fun,” Billy Joel
Man, that’s still a great song. The composition is tight, the piano is magnificent and each bridge…perfect. With that said, as life has taken me much further down the river, I am going to call bullshit on the song. Who knows, maybe Billy Joel would too now.
Johnsen, did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed today? No…but I did wake up to All Souls Day (Dia De Los Muertos). It’s a great reminder that as our own mortality inches closer every day, we should remember all of those mothers and fathers, all those sisters and brothers, all those relatives, both distant and close, as well as all the good friends, smiling from the other side. So if you are picking up what I am putting down, maybe just for 5 minutes today, turn off the phone, the computer, the tele, the sound bar etc and enjoy the communion in silence. If not, then feel free to put the blinders on and pound away like every other day.
Speaking of paying it back and paying it forward, there was a great article in Barron’s today titled “The Investor’s Case for Civic Engagement” today. I encourage you to read it.
Here is the punchline:
“In 1970, famed economist Milton Friedman wrote in the New Times that a business has “one and only one social responsibility”: to increase profits…Friedman was right that the job of investors is to compound capital.
What he left unsaid is that compounding needs a place to happen—ideally, a country where contracts hold, elections settle, and the rules don’t change with the party in power.”
