Kathy Oertel is Lakeland Outdoor’s general manager. She has actively lived in the Lakeland area for over 25+ years and worked with local and national clients for 20+ years marketing their business through outdoor advertising. She is a member of the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce, serves on the Board of Directors for the Florida Outdoor Advertising Association and enjoys working with non-profit organizations providing marketing support.


We spoke to Oertel about why she chose to work in OOH, and the importance of building a reputation with clients. Here’s what she had to say:

Will Farmer: Why are you in the OOH business?

Kathy Oertel: It was the Intrigue I developed with OOH in the early 90’s when I was a Media Buyer. We put together a campaign that was most successfully conveyed thru OOH over any other form of media that we used, and we used them all. OOH stood out!

WF: What is keeping you in it?

KO: Curiosity! This Industry has and is changing so rapidly I cannot wait to see what is next. And who does not love the reoccurring charge business!

WF: What is the greatest success or satisfaction you receive from owning OOH?

KO: Did I say, “Who does not love the reoccurring charge business?” We really enjoy working with small-business people, watching them as they grow their business suggesting and utilizing new ways of doing that thru OOH.

WF: What are some of your goals for 2021?

KO: Beat all previous years!! Secure 20% more new clients into the world of digital advertising thru OOH. In our market, that can be a challenge, but we are changing perspectives one by one.

WF: How do you obtain new business?

KO: Prospecting and qualifying all day every day! Staying in touch with what is going on around us and generally being good people to work with which is where our referrals originate, and our reputation stays solid.
