“It’s fruitcake weather”- Truman Capote
I bet you weren’t aware that fruitcake and the outdoor industry have a lot in common.
Full disclosure, Truman, the author of Breakfast at Tiffany’s and In Cold Blood has a secret we both share, our love of Fruitcake. That rich sweet cake with mosaic nuts and dried fruit is often soaked in rum! Yes, it is also often made fun of, slang for a lunatic, that it could survive even nuclear war, that it doubles as a doorstop, and it remains a favorite for re-gifting.
OOH and Fruitcake (Placenta Fructus) were both invented by the Romans. Stone tablet kiosks, and fruitcakes filled with dried pomegranates, raisins, and dates, food of the Gods! I discovered, upon investigation, Fruitcake was likely advertised on these tablets to celebrate the winter solstice and other pagan holidays.
So fruitcake makers were likely one of the first OOH advertisers! Who would have guessed?
Fruitcakes have taken some tough criticism over the years including back then. Emperor Tiberius once joked, “There’s only one fruitcake in Rome; it’s just passed from family to family. Here are some similarities that are worthy of Ripley’s Believe it or Not
Struggles to be considered a top choice
Convincing clients and agencies OOH should have more of the media pie
Fruitcake? convincing one it’s just as good as pie
There are a lot of similarities you might imagine, but the one that I like most is that both fruitcake and OOH have a long shelf life
All kidding aside, convincing potential OOH prospects to use our medium at times can be as challenging as getting someone to try Fruitcake. We know the rich ingredients of OOH can make it a great choice for a media plan.
And like fruitcake, which happens to be one of the most photographed holiday treats, your OOH media demands that same attention. So don’t forget to call on FotoFetch this holiday season.
OOH and Fruitcake, you just need to try it.
