When timing and copy collide

In a case of ironic timing and copywriting, high winds brought down a billboard owned by Impact Media Group with advertising for a personal injury law firm just one day after its installation, turning the ad’s message into an unintended punchline.

On December 4th, a gusty windstorm with sustained speeds of 55 mph hit Michigan City, causing a 10’8” x 32’ billboard promoting Dogan & Dogan, a personal injury law firm, to collapse. The billboard, freshly installed on December 3, bore the tagline: “Don’t let an injury steal your joy.”

The dramatic collapse occurred around 6 p.m. on December 4 after an hour of relentless winds. Photos taken just hours before the storm showcased the billboard in pristine condition, standing tall on the wall display. However, nature had other plans.

The good news? No injuries were reported. The site was quickly secured, and the insurance claim for the damages is already underway. The billboard company confirmed that the display will be restored shortly.

For those in the Out-of-Home (OOH) advertising industry, the incident serves as a reminder of the literal and figurative impact a campaign can have.

Whether you need legal representation—or simply a good laugh—this story demonstrates the power of timing, even when it’s unplanned.
