Horton Outdoor was started in 2015 and operates a billboard plant in Alabama, Georgia and Florida.  The company has grown via the acquisition of G&G Enterprises, Owen Media, Lewis Outdoor, Post Marketing Group and Postiglione, Zampatti & Tinsley. McWhorter Capital Partners is an investment fund with holdings in real estate, accounting, restaurants and out of home advertising. Horton Outdoor is a subsidiary of McWhorter Capital Partners. Deanna Berry is the firm’s head of operations.  Josh McWhorter is the CEO of McWhorter Capital Partners.

We spoke to McWhorter, who opened up about how he got into the OOH industry and how the memory of Eric Horton, one of the five original board members for McWhorter Capital Partners, continues to motivate him. Here’s what he had to say:

Will Farmer: Why are you in the OOH business?

Josh McWhorter: I’m in the OOH business due in large part to the late Eric Horton. Eric was instrumental in pushing MCP to making an investment in that business and giving tons of guidance on how to make it work. After we made the initial acquisition, I think most of our folks at the office fell in love with the business.

WF: What is keeping you in it?

JM: What keeps us in it is how it fits our model. We’re investor owned and our investors have come to expect quarterly dividends. While there’s certainly no guarantee in any business, OOH has provided a stable foundation to create monthly cashflow. For me, personally, I still love the business. I get a sense of pride every time I ride by and see a blue pole in the ground. Further, Eric was one of the first people to really go all in with me and our business. I feel a sense of loyalty and honoring him by continuing to grow the name.

WF: What is the greatest success or satisfaction you receive from owning OOH?

JM: As I mentioned above, just seeing the blue pole means a lot. Whether you’re buying or building, a lot goes into getting that pole in the ground with your colors. It’s certainly not a cheap business to get into and being investor owned, the blue pole signifies a lot of people’s hard work and effort over many years.

WF: What are some of your goals for 2021?

JM: Like many of your readers, we have revenue, occupancy and renewal goals we want to achieve in 2021. My big goal is whatever any goal is, we exceed it.

WF: How do you obtain new business?

JM: We’re somewhat old fashioned in that we do have Account Executives (AE) beating the street, knocking on doors and making calls. I’ve always attempted to run the sales team as I desired to be ran, more of a macro-manage model. I want our AE’s to be themselves, figure out what works for them and let the reason we hired them be the reason clients do business with them.
