Hear the ‘Grandmother of Juneteenth.’
OUTFRONT'S “A-List” of Leading Voices
Please join OUTFRONT on Friday, June 17th at 12pm as we celebrate Juneteenth, featuring an intimate conversation with Dr. Opal Lee, the ‘Grandmother of Juneteenth.’ Dr. Lee was present when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act bill, establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday.
At age 90, Dr. Lee journeyed 1,400 miles from her home in Ft. Worth, Texas to Washington, DC to get congress to make Juneteenth a national holiday. She walked in 2.5 mile increments, symbolizing the 2.5 years it took for the news of the Emancipation Proclamation to reach Texas, ensuring that all enslaved black people be freed. In recognition of her social impact efforts, 33 members of Congress nominated Lee for the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize. In 2019, she launched an online petition campaign that garnered over 1.6 million signatures to continue the crusade for holiday observance.
Our “A-List” series sits underneath our OUTFRONTX events stack. Our goal is to invite leading voices (A-Listers) with a wide range of expertise to provide topical, engaging, and purposeful discussions to our partners. We invite you to be a part of this timely and important discussion as we reflect on our nation’s history and celebrate the Black community. You will not want to miss this conversation!
You can register for this free event here: registration page.
Please join us in hearing from the woman who has been instrumental in declaring Juneteenth as an official holiday. In her own words, “Now we can celebrate freedom from the 19th of June to the 4th of July!”
Please submit any questions for Dr. Opal Lee by Tuesday, June 7 to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Hope to see you there.
