The Waiting Is The Hardest Part

Short and (semi) sweet today folks.  It’s Mother’s Day and I want to give all the Mother’s in my life their due.  They truly are the unsung heroes.  And if you don’t believe that women are the superior gender, ponder this.  Who else can spring forth life singlehandedly.  Guys, I dare you to give that a try.  My guess is you would be crying for your mommy in about two milliseconds (not that I wouldn’t).

Nice way to kick it off Johnsen, but where you going with this?  I got to thinking the other day…after one of those days.  How much of my work week is spent talking people back from the ledge?  What I mean is, on any given day how much time do I waste (ehem spend) on the phone with people trying to help them speculate why the other side has gone dark, ghosted us or has missed a deadline.

The conversation goes something like this…”Jim I know we have spoken several times today but I can’t understand why Company X hasn’t delivered the (fill  the blank) yet.  It’s really pissing me off, I’ve lost all confidence in Company X and frankly I’m starting to rethink whether I even want to do this deal.”  To which I usually respond with, “breathe in…breath out…nice and slowly now”.  Granted, I’m not saying there aren’t legitimate times for angst, but anyone who has done a deal or who is in the deal business, knows how much anxiety everyone involved experiences when parties don’t communicate or miscommunicate.

Where you going with this Johnsen?  Not quite sure, but as Gene Wilder sings in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory “come with me and you’ll be in a world of pure imagination”…imagine for a moment, we all operate in a world where every “promise” or  “I’ll do that” or “you got it” or “I’ll get back to you tomorrow” or “we are closing next week” could be taken to the bank?  Or how about, “I know you want to know definitely next week, but I have to be honest and tell you that it’s going to take a month.  I know that’s not what you want to here, but it’s the truth.  But in one month’s time I promise you will have the answer”.

How damn good would that be?  How much more restful sleep would we collectively accumulate?  Ya I know, I know, I’d have a better chance of seeing the Oompa Loompas then seeing a business world with absolute transparency.  Something fun to dream about though.  Maybe this week I will try my best to give it arrow-straight with every conversation I have.  Just saying…

Wishing you all an anxiety-less week this week.  Cheers.

“Oh, don’t let it kill you baby, don’t let it get to you
Don’t let ’em kill you baby, don’t let ’em get to you
I’ll be your breathin’ heart, I’ll be your cryin’ fool
Don’t let this go to far, don’t let it get to you”
