Today is #NationalAdoptAShelterPetDay, an annual event aimed at increasing awareness of the millions of pets around the country awaiting adoption to their forever homes. For all those that are receiving new members to your family today through adopting a new pet, we’re excited as well and wish you the best!
Following the COVID-19 associated lockdowns last year, pet ownership has grown, as it is estimated that 11.38 million US households brought in new pets during the pandemic. With an estimated 78 million dogs and 85.8 million cats owned in the United States, the upkeep to provide and take care of these pets is a huge industry.
This is evident in the spending trends for pet supply products, with the American Pet Product Association reporting the industry exceeded over $100 billion in sales for the first time in industry history. After all, we all want the best for our furry friends, from their food to their many toys and treats! However, these supplies are definitely not cheap, and every pet owner (and pet) has a favorite store or online site to make their purchases.
According to a recent report from eMarketer, almost 70% of pet owners purchase their pet supplies in a brick-and-mortar location, with grocery stores and big-box stores comprising 40% of these purchases.
With such a competitive market for pet supplies, OOH is a great medium to influence the purchase decisions for those that shop in these brick-and-mortar locations, or online! According to Simmons, 60% of those that report noticing an OOH ad in the last 30 days currently have a pet in their household. In terms of those that shop for their pet supplies at PetSmart or Petco, 71% report noticing an OOH ad in the last 30 days – 8% more likely to than the total population! Online pet supply shoppers are no different, with 69% reporting they have noticed OOH during the last 30 days, 5% more likely to notice than the total population.
According to Geopath Insights, there are 9.2 billion weekly impressions for those that shop online for pet supplies, and 30 billion weekly impressions for those that have shopped at any pet supply store in the past 3 months. It’s pretty clear that OOH offers great opportunities for advertisers to reach pet owners across the country, helping to “un-leash” more spending on pet supplies!
