Are you old enough to remember when you interlocked your fingers and put your arms in a “u” so that your buddy could put one hand on your shoulder and one foot in your interlocked fingers so that you could, together boost him up over a fence, on to a roof or through a window? Most of the time this lead to you both doing something you probably shouldn’t have, but damn was that fun.
I am a terrible keep in touch kind of guy and some would call that a terrible friend. I would argue that my friendships run deep, but picking up the phone after not talking to someone for five years just ain’t my thing. See them at a high school reunion or run into them at the Billy Joel concert. I’m all in. So needless to say I was a bit surprised last week when I got a call from a high school friend I hadn’t heard from in 45 years to let me know a history teacher who we both knew and loved had passed away.
Just another soul spinning around on this tennis ball we call earth, right? No cream cheese off your bagel, right? I beg you to pause for a moment and think about all of those tremendous people that got you to the very spot you are standing right now. Ben Stark gave me a fiery curiosity for ancient history, philosophy…and tore my writing to shreds. I really liked the guy but hadn’t given him a second thought since graduating in 1981. The phone call made me reflect on how many seemingly insignificant souls (and yet, true heroes) interlocked their fingers for me.
I hope you will reflect as well. Rock on.

Must have a code that you can live by
And so, become yourself
Because the past is just a goodbye” CSNY
