What the Industry’s Toughest Environments Reveal About Digital Billboard Reliability

When evaluating a digital billboard, most operators focus on the obvious factors: image quality, brightness, features, and purchase price.

But according to Omar Crespo Coll, president of Pro-Active Steel Services in Puerto Rico, a long-time Watchfire partner, some of the most important considerations don’t become apparent until years after a display is installed.

Over the past several decades, Crespo Coll has installed and maintained digital billboards throughout Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and Africa. Along the way, he has worked through hurricanes, extreme humidity, remote job sites, customs delays, unreliable infrastructure, and locations where access to replacement parts and technical support can be difficult.

Those experiences have taught him a simple lesson: the environments that challenge digital billboards the most also reveal what matters most when evaluating a display.

“The things that make a billboard successful in a harsh environment are the same things that make it successful anywhere,” said Crespo Coll. “The difference is that in difficult conditions, weaknesses show up much faster.”

For operators evaluating a digital billboard investment, here are four areas worth examining before making a purchase decision.

1. How the Display Is Protected from Heat and Moisture

In tropical climates, heat, humidity, salt air, and severe weather are constant realities. Crespo Coll has seen firsthand how environmental exposure can impact long-term performance.

Following Hurricane Maria, he observed major differences in how various displays recovered. Some experienced significant failures and lengthy outages, while others returned to service much more quickly.

That experience reinforced the importance of looking beyond the display’s specifications and understanding how it is engineered.

According to Byron Hall and Michael Cox, directors of product development at Watchfire, long-term reliability begins with component selection and environmental protection. “We go over components with a fine-tooth comb,” said Hall. “If LEDs degrade faster than what we want, we do not use them.”

Watchfire uses conformal coatings, silicone potting materials, gaskets, and other protective measures designed to shield sensitive electronics from moisture intrusion. The company also emphasizes active ventilation to help manage heat inside the display. “The hotter electronics run, the shorter they last,” said Cox. “Heat is one of the biggest enemies of long-term reliability.”

While many operators may never face a hurricane, every display must endure years of rain, temperature swings, humidity, and environmental exposure. Understanding how a manufacturer protects against those threats can provide valuable insight into long-term performance.

2. How Much Assembly Happens in the Field

One of the biggest differences Crespo Coll has observed among manufacturers is installation complexity. Over the years, he has worked with displays that arrived in dozens of individual cabinets requiring extensive assembly on site.

More assembly often means more wiring, more connections, more labor, and more opportunities for errors. “When you’re working in remote locations or under difficult conditions, simplicity matters,” he said.

The same principle applies regardless of location. Every connection point represents a potential failure point. Every hour spent assembling a display in the field introduces additional risk.

Watchfire’s approach is to complete as much assembly as possible in a controlled factory environment. Billboards are typically shipped in large sections that require fewer connections and less field assembly.

“When smaller sections are assembled on site, you’re doing that work 100 feet in the air instead of in our factory,” said Cox. “It’s much harder to get right.”

Hall added that reducing the need for installers to access the interior of the cabinet has been a major engineering focus. “The fewer connections and assembly steps required in the field, the faster the installation can be completed, and the fewer potential points of failure exist over the life of the display.”

Features such as interlocking cabinet systems allow installers to join large billboard sections without removing LED modules or spending significant time working inside the display.

For operators, the takeaway is simple: ask how much work must be performed on-site and how many connections installers must make in the field.

3. What Happens When Something Goes Wrong

No matter how well a display is engineered, every operator will eventually need service or repairs. The real question is how quickly those issues can be diagnosed and resolved.

“A billboard that’s down isn’t just a maintenance problem,” said Crespo Coll. “It’s a revenue problem.” If advertisers aren’t receiving the impressions they paid for, operators may be forced to provide makegoods, credits, or other accommodations. Downtime directly impacts profitability.

That’s why Crespo Coll encourages operators to evaluate serviceability before purchasing a display. How accessible are critical components? How easy is it for technicians to perform repairs? How quickly can replacement parts be obtained?

According to Hall, Watchfire emphasizes consistency across its product line to make troubleshooting and repairs more efficient. “Once installers learn the Watchfire layout, it’s very repeatable,” he said. “They know where key components are located and how to access them.”

Watchfire billboards are designed with rear-service access, allowing technicians to reach critical components from the catwalk. Components are positioned for visibility and ease of replacement, helping reduce repair times.

Crespo Coll also points to spare parts availability as an often-overlooked consideration. In many cases, replacement components are shipped separately and may be misplaced or discarded

over time. Watchfire stores spare parts directly inside the billboard, ensuring they remain available when needed.

“In remote locations, that can make a tremendous difference,” said Crespo Coll. “Having the right part immediately available can save days or even weeks.”

4. Look Beyond Purchase Price

Of all the lessons Crespo Coll has learned throughout his career, this may be the most important.

“I’ve seen operators focus on the upfront price and then spend years dealing with maintenance issues, downtime, and replacement costs,” he said. “The cheapest billboard isn’t always the least expensive billboard.”

Total cost of ownership includes far more than the initial purchase price. Installation labor, energy consumption, service calls, replacement parts, downtime, and expected lifespan all contribute to the true cost of a display.

The challenging environments Crespo Coll works in simply make those costs more visible. “When you’re dealing with a remote site, a difficult installation, or a major weather event, you find out very quickly whether you made the right investment.”

But operators don’t need to experience a hurricane or a remote international deployment to benefit from those lessons. The same engineering decisions that help a display survive extreme conditions also contribute to better reliability, easier maintenance, longer service life, and stronger return on investment in everyday applications.

The toughest environments expose weaknesses faster. They also highlight the design decisions that create long-term success. For billboard operators evaluating their next digital display, the most important questions may not be about what happens on day one. They may be about what happens five, ten, or fifteen years later.
