Adeshola Makinde and OUTFRONT Media strategically target billboards throughout Grand Rapids for Black History Month
Grand Rapids, Michigan native Adeshola Makinde is using art to inspire others for Black History Month. Makinde partnered with OUTFRONT Media of Grand Rapids creating nine billboards throughout the downtown area displaying quotes from historical figures like James Baldwin, Angela Davis, Malcolm X, Coretta Scott King, Shirley Chisholm and more.
Makinde selected poster locations to match the messages and the neighborhoods as only OOH can target.
“I think when black people go into those spaces, they sometimes don’t feel seen, so I think them being on Ionia Street and various parts of downtown was really huge for me,” said Makinde.
An example of fitting a specific message with a targeted billboard location tackling community issues Makinde says, “I chose for the Coretta Scott King one to be on Division (Avenue) because the quote is talking about community, not forgetting about the less fortunate, and the community is reflected by how we treat those people. And I think that in times like this, it’s important for us to remember something like that.”
