Why I’m Gung-Ho to Attend the DPAA Next Tuesday!

by Brent Baer, Publisher, OOH Today

That’s right, I said it, GUNG-HO! And that’s about the best way for me to describe it. Gung-ho!

Instead of gung-ho, ‘excited’ was offered up by AI, but everyone overuses the word excited’ about everything, whether they really are or not. ‘Excited‘ to join a new company. ‘Excited‘ about the new measurement! Please, child. Excited’ about being acquired. Sure, you are. ‘Excited’ to announce the hiring of a new HR person. Oh, come on. ‘Excited‘ is so overused. Geesh, if another press release comes to my inbox using the word ‘excited’, I swear I’m going to change it to ‘Gung-Ho!’

Why am I gung-ho about the DPAA Summit next week?

It’s that time of year again; I’m off to New York next week to catch up with colleagues, chat with old friends, make some new ones, and conduct some business. It’s a week full of events, but by far my favorite and the best for accomplishing all of my goals is the DPAA Summit on Tuesday, October 14. Everyone involved in digital out-of-home advertising is there – including the networks, programmatic companies, media agencies, brands, other press, research organizations, hardware, and software. It’s all about DOOH. Plenty of opportunities to engage with industry professionals and new entrants to the out-of-home sector. It’s a growing family.

There are the big brands on stage – H&R Block, Warner Bros. Pictures, Marc Jacobs, Paramount+, ESPN — it’s a strong group of CMOs and media leaders from a variety of industries. DPAA always brings together senior executives to discuss the big picture of advertising today, as well as their perspectives on and experiences with DOOH. By interacting with all of us, they gain a better understanding of our business, which keeps us top of mind and nudges them to use OOH more. This year, AI will be a significant focus, and every conference is addressing this topic. However, DPAA is the only one specifically discussing its use with DOOH. A few speakers are addressing this, including the author who literally wrote the book on “Marketing with AI for Dummies.”

Particularly, I’m looking forward to the DOOH/CTV panel; It’s a Video World, and since it’s the Video Everywhere Summit, this is a great fit. I’m interested in hearing what everyone has to say.  The DPAA gang always finds ways to entertain us, and this year it’s MJ The Musical, and I’m waiting for Barry’s showy entrance this year – it’s always a lot of fun. The event is not just about work, but also about having a great time and enjoying the entertainment.

Personally, I spend a significant amount of time speaking with various exhibitors and sponsors, learning about new tools, platforms, and resources. And yes, Virginia, to drum up some ad business for OOH Today. But mostly the former, as it’s what I need to know to publish the ‘right stuff‘ for OOH Today.

There are a lot of people and a lot of opportunities, and when I need a break, I go to the entrance, where they always have those adorable puppies! But don’t let me kid you about the puppies; it is truly a full day of high-level learning, strong networking, and a Happy Hour on the Hudson River as the sun sets, culminating in a stellar end to a perfect conference day. The learning opportunities are endless, and it’s a great chance to expand your knowledge in the industry.

I’ll be there, likely not front and center, because I’ll be working the rooms. If you see me, stop and say hello. I’m told tickets are going fast, so you should get them now at https://dpaasummit.com/global/.

While DPAA asked me to write a few words promoting the show and they are an advertiser with us, know that I would have done it with out their dough. Please don’t let them know.

Long before OOH Today. I have attended the DPAA Summit for the past 14 years. There is a reason I have not missed one; It’s that good!

See you next Tuesday.
