The Physical World Can Drive Digital Action
A digital action does not always start on a digital screen
A search can start with an ad seen in a grocery store. A website visit can follow a message encountered on the way to lunch. An app download can begin with a screen someone passes during the workday.
That connection between the physical and online worlds is becoming increasingly important for media planners. Online media may be the star player in most advertising plans, receiving the largest share of budget, attention, and attribution. But OOH can play the MVP role by reinforcing those messages in the real world and helping move consumers toward the online actions brands are trying to generate in the first place.
Static OOH and DOOH are not alternatives to an online strategy. They can be part of what makes that strategy work harder.
From Physical Exposure to Online Action
The path from an OOH impression to an online response is increasingly measurable.
OAAA analyzed hundreds of campaigns and found that OOH delivered a median 14% lift in digital outcomes, including website visits and app downloads. Even more interesting, conversion rates for digital actions increased 5.3 times as OOH exposure grew from one to 10 impressions.
That reinforcement matters because online behavior does not necessarily begin online. Search, social activity, and ecommerce decisions can all be prompted by something consumers encounter away from their phones. OAAA research found that three in four recent OOH viewers engaged with a mobile device after seeing an OOH ad, nearly half searched for more information, and more than 40% made an online purchase.
For planners, the question becomes less about which channel gets credit and more about which combination gets the consumer to act.
OOH Creates Another Way In
This is where both static and digital out-of-home have a role.
A wallboard in a physician’s office, signage in a retail environment, a poster in a neighborhood business, or a digital screen inside a workplace all create physical touchpoints that can reinforce what consumers have already seen online or introduce something they will investigate later.
DOOH adds another layer of flexibility, allowing advertisers to move quickly, change creative, and focus campaigns by market or moment. But whether the execution is static or digital, the larger advantage is the same: the brand is showing up in the physical environments where people actually spend their time.
OAAA and Winterberry Group found this year that 98% of surveyed marketers incorporate OOH into purchase-driven commerce initiatives, with 86% expecting their investment to increase over the next two years. The research also found cost-effective reach and consistent messaging across touchpoints among the primary roles marketers see for OOH.
Building for the Way Brands Buy Now
That connection is also shaping place-based OOH itself. Across the industry, companies are expanding DOOH inventories alongside established static networks, giving agencies more ways to connect real-world exposure to increasingly online-focused campaigns.
Industry veterans Encompass Media Group have led this space for years. EMG built its business around non-traditional, static OOH in everyday consumer environments. Over time, that footprint has grown to include thousands of digital screens and partnerships nationwide. Media vendors like EMG have gotten the message: driving consumers toward digital and online experiences creates a broader mix of ways for brands to reach consumers in the physical world and, crucially, support what happens next online.
The point is not simply having more formats. It is choosing the right physical touchpoints for the objective, then using them to reinforce the larger campaign.
The MVP May Be in the Physical World
Place-based OOH combines cost-efficient reach with something online media cannot replicate on its own: physical presence in the places and moments that shape consumer behavior. And increasingly, the evidence shows that presence does not end with awareness. It can lead directly back to search, websites, apps, social platforms, and purchases.
If online media is the star player, OOH may be the MVP helping the rest of the plan perform better. Choosing place-based OOH is therefore not simply about adding another channel; it is an opportunity to make the entire media plan more effective.
