The Death of the Digital Signage Expo

The Digital Signage Expo has been cancelled, permanently. The show organizer, Exponation LLC closed the ‘show’ by filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Initially, the DSE 2020 event was rescheduled, (after postponement from March because of COVID-19), to take place from November 11 to the 13th in its usual venue, Las Vegas.

Poor Business Ethics?

The fact that DSE/Exponation, LLC even believed they could have a rescheduled date in 2020 with the Coronavirus still lurking about, and Covid projections to become even worse this fall, was unbelievable and frankly, irresponsible. As recent as last week they were still pushing for attendance and exhibitors. Companies just don’t wake up one morning and decide to file bankruptcy. The amount of time to gather the documents, complete paperwork and hire attorneys does not  happen over night.

We have heard from a handful of OOH professionals regarding the closing of the doors. The comments which stand out are questioning: 1. why a virtual event was not organized in its place?
2. how is it that the DSE did not offer refunds to exhibitors or prepaid attendees? (including those whose tickets from March were not refunded but ‘rolled forward’ for the event in November). We are not aware of any other ‘legitimate’ trade shows failing to provide refunds.

When the Geopath/OAAA Out of Home (GO2020) Conference and Expo was cancelled Geopath shared they would be making refunds. See the post here ⇒It is Official, The Geopath/OAAA Out of Home Media Conference and Expo is Cancelled.  We surveyed a handful of attendees who had already paid, and they reported they were indeed refunded.

From the DSE

Exponation, LLC put out the following statement via Twitter: “As a result of the impact Covid-19 has had on the live events industry, Exponation LLC (producer of Digital Signage Expo, LED Specifier Summit, LightShow West, DigitalSignageConnection.com and West Coast Lighting Insider) has filed for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy, which is a liquidation of all assets and permanent closure of the company. If you are a creditor of Exponation LLC you will be notified by the bankruptcy court via U.S Mail shortly, with instructions about filing a claim against Exponation’s limited remaining assets.”
