OOH …Here’s One Thing
by Jim Johnsen,
Managing Director, Johnsen, Fretty & Company
We are now at the peak of summer, and if you are like me, you are hoping that the whole world is getting ready to take a little breather. So, rather than bore you with my rantings on the outdoor industry or something similar, I thought I would give you a break this week and go with something a little lighter. I was listening to Radio Paradise (thanks again Tony Dailey) a couple of days back, and I thought for sure Janis Joplin was on. When I looked at the car’s console, it displayed the name “Big Brother and the Holding Company.” And that got me thinking (never a good thing by the way), how many bands are the successors to other bands? Turns out that Janis did play with Big Brother before going solo: Big Brother and the Holding Company Lyrics, Songs, and Albums | Genius
In the interest of keeping it light, I thought I would serve up a David Letterman-style list of ten groups and their predecessors.
- Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young / Buffalo Springfield and The Byrds
- Genesis / Flaming Youth
- Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers / Mudcrutch
- The Grateful Dead / The Warlocks
- Junior Walker and All the Stars / The Rhythm Rockers
- The Rolling Stones / The Rollin’ Stones
- Jefferson Airplane / The Great Society
- Talking Heads / Tom Tom Club
- Stevie Ray Vaughan / Triple Threat Revue
- Eric Clapton / Cream
And lest we forget…the outdoor business has tons of provenance as well:
Pacific Outdoor – Combined Communications – Gannett – Outdoor Systems – Infinity – Viacom – CBS – OUFRONT….
Or how about Foster and Kleiser – Patrick Media Group – Eller Media – Clear Channel Outdoor…
Okay, you can now turn up the A/C and go back to your iced coffee.
“Summertime, and the living is easy.
Fish are jumping, and the cotton is high.
Oh, your daddy’s rich, and your ma is good-looking.
So, hush, little baby, don’t you cry.” Ella Fitzgerald
