‘Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’

OOH…Here’s One Thing

by Jim Johnsen, Managing Director, Johnsen, Fretty & Company

Jeez, two weeks ago IBO and this past week DPAA.  Surely Johnsen you have some material for us.  Well to be honest, most of it washes over my feeble old brain like the 1991 OAAA does (except for the part where Nancy Fletcher gets nominated).

But wow, the Mooch!  Now that was a talk. Wait, don’t know the Mooch?

The guy that was Trump’s White House Communications Director for 11 days.  The guy that graduated high school with my wife and dated her best friend.  The guy who talked himself into Goldman Sachs.  And the guy who pretended his car broke down on a deserted highway and then gently talked my best friend’s girlfriend into the back seat (willingly I should add) during law school.

I was always one degree of separation from the Mooch, but did watch him go deep on trivia (anything from the 1938 Yankees to famous Generals to past Presidents to Silent Picture Movie stars) with the Maitre D’ at Valbella’s Restaurant.  I have to say, the guy’s recall and horsepower is quite impressive.  Losing his temper and asking the Maitre D’ outside so he could beat the sh-t out of him.  Well a bit less impressive.

Thanks Johnsen for some trivial inside dirt on the Mooch, but who is he and why should we care about him?

He’s bold.

He’s obnoxious

He’s slick

He’s high energy

He’s “common man”  (or at least he claims to be) He’s smart.  Really smart.

He bullshits with the best of them.

He’s fearless

He takes chances

He lets it fly

He’s American

Still not sure?  Take a watch on this 2 minute segment: https://youtu.be/NdJq4f-Uino?si=lqEejRzdWWv144Ti

Or maybe this one:  https://youtube.com/shorts/pWBnZnIKdGY?si=CjEb8glYix9jXWW0

Do I agree with all of his political views and his trumped up (pun intended) life expertise?  Hell no. Do I love him for his willingness to rip the band aid off, with no caveats or apologies, and to do it with style and eloquence?  Hell yes.  Want to know what he said at the recent DPAA?  Attend the next one.  But one thing that for me landed right between the eyes…his statement that we are where we are now because we let China into the WTO in 1995.

…we are where we are now because we let China into the WTO in 1995.

Still not sure who Scaramucci is?  His wiki sums him up pretty well: Anthony Scaramucci – Wikipedia

And from yesterday’s news:  ‘Scaramucci jokes about Zacharia’s brief stint as press secretary – Zacharia, who started her job on Monday, was shown the door on Friday – “Records are made to be broken,” Scaramucci posted on X, commiserating with the plight of the now ex-press secretary. “But I take no pleasure in other people’s pain.”

I will leave you with this.  Had he been in the outdoor business while Kluge, Manderson, Adams, Naegale, Moreno or Eller were making their run, there may have been no contest.

Wasn’t sure which piece to pick…so I picked both:
