Friday Fast Fact – Oklahoma City Market Infographic

by Brian SchopperMarketing Manager, Geopath

For today’s Fast Fact, let’s take a look at Oklahoma’s capital, and the second-largest state capital in the US – the Oklahoma City market!

One of Oklahoma City’s largest industries is oil, and its related industries such as natural gas and petroleum products. In fact, Oklahoma City itself rests above an active oil field, as does much of the state. But did you know that the OKC Capitol Building is the only one in the world that sits on an active oil well? There are actually oil derricks found around the capitol grounds!

Today, the concept of metered parking is nearly standard when searching for parking. Pre-1935, that was a different story. It was actually OKC’s Mayor Carl C. Magee who first introduced metered parking. When cars began to clog the city’s streets in the mid-1930s, Magee introduced parking meters to much public backlash. However they caught on and soon spread, as both a way to curb excess parking and generate revenue for localities.

Let’s take a look at the newest geekOUT market infographic for the Oklahoma City DMA.

You’ll notice a very high percentage of workers commute to work alone in this market, as opposed to carpooling or public transit, with 82% of people driving alone. That said, 1 in 10 workers in this market carpool to work. The average drive time here is a short 22 minutes, much shorter than many major metropolitan areas.

There is a wide variety of industries utilizing OOH in this market, when looking at the top categories of OOH Spenders. Several tourism-based categories are represented here near the top and middle of the list. Interestingly, multiple vehicular categories are represented here as well, with different car/truck dealers making use of OOH in this market!
