My Generation

I maybe singing into the wind here, or maybe this strikes a chord with you as well?

“Hey Dad.”

“Hey kiddo, what’s happening?”

“Well, my anxiety is off the charts, I am wildly depressed and I’m having a hard time finding some real friends.  In addition my ADD is making it hard to complete anything.”

“Geez, that’s not good.  You should be having the time of your life in your 20s. I’m surprised you feel that way.  Let me ask you a question.”

Sure Dad, shoot.

“Do you believe in a higher power, and by that I mean do you really put some work into your spirituality?”

“Well I guess there is something out there but I’m too busy for all that organized religion bs.  Every once in a while I do hit the yoga mat though.”

“Huh, that’s interesting…

Speaking of yoga, how’s the exercise regime going?”

“No time for that either Dad. I’ve got too much going on.”

“Got it.  How are you managing your screen time these days?  Are you able to take some time off from Tik Tok, Snapchat, Instagram and the group texts these days?  (I know not to ask you about that lame thing called Facebook btw).”

“Ya tik tok is pretty addictive.  I have to admit.  On Tuesday I ended up spending like 10 hours on it.  Also all my college buddies are posting insta’s from all these cool places like Bali that they are now “remote working” from.  I got to say, it really makes me feel like a loser that I’m not doing the same.”

“Interesting.  How’s work going?”

“I have to be honest Dad, it’s just too damn hard.  They want me to be in the office by 830, we always have a meeting at the end of the day and there are so many boring tasks I have to perform each day.  I can’t believe my boss has been doing this same shitty job for 15 years.  At the same time my insta friends are posting that they are now crushing it 2 years out of school.  Who wants to work at something for 15 years and barely get anywhere?”

“Huh.  I guess I’m old school.  I thought it took a while to build your knowledge base and your business network.  Sounds like that doesn’t apply any longer.  Maybe time to consider a job in the public sector, something that might help serve the country?”

“Serve the country Dad?  How old are you?  You do realize that no one in my generation thinks the country matters any longer, right?  I mean what have they done for my generation other than alienate us?”

Perhaps this is history just repeating itself and this old codger has nothing to worry about.  Or perhaps we are destined for the unraveling of the world as we know it.   All I know is I can’t explain.
