Going Guerrilla, OOH Pirates at it —AGAIN!
Tactics Change, Disruption Strategy the Same
Los Angeles Outdoor Advertising Companies
take collective sighs in relief
We have shared stories of the pirating or hijacking of Out of Home billboards and bus shelters in LA on multiple occasions this year, starting with Shock Billboards Go Up For Oscars. Recall our post on the self-described, right-wing, street artist, Sabo, who pirated ‘3 Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ fashion from OUTFRONT MEDIA Los Angeles back in March of this year. That March story is here⇒ Sabo Shock Billboards Go Up For Oscars.
In January, the former Minnesota Senator Al Franken post here ⇒Outfront Media Quickly Quells Disturbing Billboard Image. We have written about two other episodes of illicit #OOH hijacking hijinks, here⇒Showtime Sacha Baron Coehn and here⇒Grinding Google.
The Latest Victim by ‘The Faction’
Last week, in what could be technically considered Out of Home; Guerrilla Marketing by “The Faction,” a self-described “rogue right-wing street art crew, struck. The traditional Outdoor Advertising companies were spared. ‘The Faction’ has taken over ‘space’ without permission to promote their political agenda.
They hijacked Papa John’s stores and delivery cars throughout California. Featuring copy, ‘Better Immigration. Better Country.’ ‘100% Legal Drivers Guaranteed!’ ‘Free ICE with every Coke’ (look closely at the ‘Coke’ poster).
Additionally, the pizza company name was changed to ‘Papa Don’s’, with MAGA instead of the word Pizza above. (Make America Great Again). Fitting the President in a red shirt, just like company founder and former spokesman, John Schnatter, the creative was right on.
Installing window clings, car toppers and car decals, ‘The Faction’ has demonstrated an understanding of OOH design and expertise in installation and OOH production of vinyl graphics for this pirated gambit.
One wonders if there were #billboard insiders working with them.
