Nonstop Creativity from Extra Credit Projects for Gerald R. Ford International Airport’s 60th Anniversary

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH— Midwest-based advertising and design agency, Extra Credit Projects (ECP), pulled out all the (non)stops as client Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GFIA) celebrated a major milestone in 2023, helping them launch an anniversary campaign to mark the occasion.

The outdoor-centric, integrated 60th anniversary campaign is running across a variety of out of home tactics, including billboards, transit, place-based, airport on-premises and more, as well as other media. The theme “Nonstop Peace of Mind Since 1963” evokes the ease and convenience of travel to more than 30 nonstop destinations, with timely and relevant ads connecting the 1963 anniversary to today’s modern airport.

The campaign design has been extremely well received with the Airport and greater community, so much so that GFIA created an online store featuring limited time branded anniversary apparel and other items.

Additionally, the Airport commemorated the anniversary with a community celebration event on National Aviation Day, Saturday, August 19, which attracted more than 6,000 people to enjoy an aircraft landings, food trucks, live music, free swag and more.

Over the last three years, Gerald R. Ford International Airport has seen a steady and continuous rise in monthly travelers, and are projecting 2023 to exceed their record-breaking 2019 year. The Airport generates $3.1 billion in economic output to the region, supporting 2,000+ jobs, and is currently undergoing one of the largest capital expansion programs for a small-hub airport in the country, with more than $500 million in investments.

“We were inspired by the 1960s for our campaign design, colors and concept,” said Eric Lowe, Sr. Art Director at Extra Credit Projects. “The look and messaging are meant to be fun, colorful reminders of the anniversary, while still promoting their 30+ nonstop destinations and modern amenities.”

The 60th anniversary campaign is the latest in the partnership between ECP and the Airport. Past years’ campaigns have been awarded multiple local and national awards, including American Advertising Federation Best in Show and Best Overall Marketing Campaign for a Small Hub Airport from industry organization, Airports Council International — North America.
