Geopath Market Spotlight – Charlotte DMA

Geopath has compiled OOH advertising spend data for Q1 of 2021 sourced from Kantar for the DMA, as well infographics for this and all 200+ DMAs across the country. These insights, along with many more, are available to Geopath members in our GeekOUT Library.

For today’s GeekOUT Fast Fact, let’s check out a market we last highlighted in September of 2020, the twenty-first largest DMA in the country, Charlotte, NC. To start, let’s look at who was spending in OOH within the DMA for the first quarter of 2021.

While the top spenders are split among a number of industries, the insurance sector has the most representation with three brands in the top ten. Additionally, it’s interesting to note that State Farm is the top spender within the market for Q1, holding the top position above its competitor, Geico. As mentioned in previous Fast Facts, Geico was the leading OOH spender across the top markets in 2020. Allstate, however, has since taken that title for Q1 of 2021 – though only ranks fifth in the Charlotte DMA. That said, with all three companies among the top OOH spenders for January through March, they are surely seeing the value OOH has in reaching their target audiences across the market.

According to Geopath Insights, there are almost 5,000 frames measured by Geopath within the DMA, which generate more than 500 million impressions each week! As for insurance-related audiences, the inventory in the Charlotte DMA generates 71 million weekly impressions among those that report State Farm as the “auto insurance provider for their household.” Similarly, the inventory accounts for 50 million weekly impressions among those that report Geico as their household’s auto insurance provider and another 31 million among Allstate auto insurance owners.

With a population of 3.4 million, and almost 40% of all commuting trips within the DMA taking 30 minutes or more, it isn’t surprising that advertisers are taking advantage of OOH in the Charlotte DMA, reaching local audiences while they move about their day.
