‘Beyond The Billboard’, the first South African OOH Podcast, launched in February 2024 and is now just over a year old and going strong!

Kirsty Carlson and Livia Brown joined forces to create Sub-Saharan Africa’s first Out-of-Home Advertising podcast. This podcast covers OOH advertising and more across South Africa and the Rest of Africa media. Beyond the Billboard is just over its 1-year mark of releasing its first episode in March 2024.

Livia Brown and Kirsty Carlson co-host episodes and include VIP guests and experts, where they delve deep into some of the most critical and relevant topics, challenge the status quo, and share knowledge & insights. Episodes also include senior guests who inspire listeners by sharing their stories and experiences of entering the media industry and their career journeys. They also discuss exciting OOH campaigns, both old and new. The podcast has become a trusted voice, featuring incredible guests from agencies, brands, and creative sectors, discussing the challenges, opportunities, and insights of the OOH medium.

Kirsty and Livia are Out of Home (OOH) Advertising experts, with over 12+ years of experience. They have successfully led OOH Departments in large media agency groups in South Africa, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the OOH landscape, its complexities, challenges, and benefits. They have also developed key relationships with partners in this ever-evolving space. To share their insights and knowledge, they created a podcast inviting industry experts to discuss insightful and topical OOH discussions. Beyond the Billboard has stayed true to its mission to inform, educate, and inspire the OOH industry for the past year.

There are 36 episodes published over the past 13 months on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. And as a podcast dedicated to the powerful visual medium of OOH, it’s only fitting that they took the next step into video in 2025.

Podcast listenership in South Africa is growing according to Edison & Neilsen reports. South Africa’s consumption has grown 50% YOY. South Africa tracks trends in the United States and the United Kingdom, two of the biggest markets for online audio listening. 69% of those surveyed in the USA listen online, with 75% in the UK compared to SA’s 61%.

The Beyond the Billboard podcast listenership continues to grow steadily. The podcast has a majority of South African listeners; however, it has also gained some international listeners from countries such as Nigeria, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia, to name a few.
