OUTFRONT hacked by Anti-semitics: Warning, Graphic Hate Messages Below
On Wednesday, October 16, electronic billboards in Northbrook, Illinois, a Chicago suburb were hacked.
Antisemitic messages, including “F*** Israel” and “DEATH TO ISRAEL,” were shown against a Palestine Flag background.
The incident coincided with a Jewish holiday, Sukkot. Local officials, including Congressman Brad Schneider, have condemned the act.
OUTFRONT Media was quick to respond to the incident and had them shut down by 7pm. They also confirmed they had been hacked and issued statements addressing the incident on all of their social media platforms.
The messages said they were paid for by “Mr Beast LLC”, who is a YouTuber. MrBeast said he was not involved with the incident and has contacted authorities.
When OOH Today reached out for additional comment on how the hack occurred and what had happened, OUTFRONT reiterated that they are actively investigating the incident.
Local authorities are also investigating the incident. The Jewish United Fund of Chicago also issued a statement expressing support for the Jewish Community.
This incident brings to light significant security concerns within the digital out-of-home (DOOH) space, particularly for media owners. As OUTFRONT continues its investigation, the entire industry will need to take a closer look at how this breach occurred. Strengthening cybersecurity measures will be key to preventing future incidents and ensuring that digital platforms remain safe from misuse.
