Friday Fast Fact – On This Day: January 10th

by Brian SchopperMarketing Manager, Geopath

Throughout history, we have endeavored to travel beyond the restrictions of human locomotion. Whether on horseback, boat, wagon, train, car, or plane, humankind has constantly redefined “travel.” As our lives and societies became more complex, so too did our needs and motivations for travel.

The 19th and early 20th centuries saw massive expansion of railways, connecting large swaths of land and allowing for easier transportation of goods and people. In the United States alone, between 1865 and 1916, rail trackage increased from 35,000 miles to 254,000 miles, an increase of 625%. However, this rail boom also occurred within metropolitan centers, not just between them.

It was on this day – January 10th, 1863 – that the London Underground opened to the public. This date marks the opening of the world’s first underground passenger railway, an essential means of transport for millions worldwide daily.

In the United States, for instance, there are more than a dozen such rail systems. The Subway system in New York City, where Geopath is based, is the most extensive system in the US and the largest in the world, followed by the Shanghai Metro, the Beijing Subway, the Seoul Subway, and the Paris Metro.

Across the United States transit systems, Geopath measures OOH Station inventory in over 2,200 transit stations and hubs—including!

This inventory, nearly 50,000 spots, generates over 106 million impressions weekly. Of these 106 million weekly impressions:

  • 90% of transit station impressions are from Persons 21+
  • 1/3 of these impressions are from consumers who have been to a professional sporting event in the last year
  • There are more impressions from those who plan to buy a house in the next 12 months compared to those who plan to sell (5 million vs. 1.7 million, respectively)
