OOH …Here’s One Thing

Keep Your Eyes on the Road, Your Hand Upon the Wheel

by Jim Johnsen,
Managing Director, Johnsen, Fretty & Company

I booted up my car this morning to run an errand and someone switched the station on me.  Given all the kids home for the holidays playing car roulette though, I should not have been surprised.  Before I got a chance to switch stations (or better yet switch to carplay), Roadhouse Blues came on and I thought what a friggin rockin’ way to send all my outdoor friends into the New Year. Click here→ Roadhouse Blues  It has been said that it is scientifically proven that you can’t walk to this song without feeling like a badass.

You old timers will get it…back in the day, there was not much that was better than the Doors.  You new timers…I get it…I will not be offended if you tell me I should be off to the glue factory.  But hey, as painful as it is, give it a listen, you might learn something about music when it was really music.

Why bring in 2024 with this song, Johnsen?  Well, I don’t know about you, but I am feeling pumped for 2024.  With the feds lowering rates a little, a big election coming on, and some pent-up demand on the advertising side, feels like the recession (or the nonrecession as it were) is behind us…I am pumped.

“The future’s uncertain

And the end is always near

Let it roll, baby, roll”

In other words…let’s get down to business!

On the more mundane front, as some may remember, I usually like to write something about New Year’s resolutions right after the first.  Well, this year I am going to go with a variation on this.  Honestly, I am plagiarizing this directly from Jesse Itzler, but I thought it was so good that I think it’s worth reverbing it here (and yes for me the jury is still out on this guy…piker or punter?…but that’s beside the point).  So without further ado…here it is:

  1. Plan one BIG adventure for 2024.  Something that not only takes you out of your comfort zone but also makes you more than a little scared.  Is anyone up for late-night Bungee jumping at the Oktoberfest?
  2. Four quarterly habits.  Aka start with one in Q1, then add another in Q2, and so on.  By year’s end, you should be performing those habits every day (at which point they are habits so you don’t need to think about them).  One habit could be as simple as making sure to drink 100 oz of water every day.   How about one written thank you note per week, i.e. the ones sent through the US postal service?
  3. 6 mini adventures.  1 every other month.  Does anyone want to join me at the track for the Porsche experience?
  4. Show up for people.  Decide who matters…and then push the shit that doesn’t matter aside and REALLY show up.  Amen Jesse, so simple but always good to hear it again.

If you want the full Monty, you can listen in here:

It works just as well at 1.5 speed 🙂

Look forward to spending some quality time with you in 2024.  Keep your eyes on the road.
