Attending WOOH in Hong Kong
Last week, I was fortunate to attend the World OOH conference in Hong Kong. The last time I attended the Event, it was in Toronto, in my backyard, which made it easy. This was my first experience abroad for the conference and my first time traveling to Asia. It was awesome!
Key Highlights included…
Meeting/seeing old and new friends/acquaintances. Our hosts, Tom Goddard, Anna Pisano, Mark Flys, and Richard Saturley, couldn’t have been more accommodating and had everything dialed into perfection. The location, schedule, local tours, and social hours were spot on – Well done, and thank you! The Event had a few NA attendees, including Anna Bager, Jeremy Male, Chris Cowlbeck, good friends from Vistar, BroadSign, and HiveStack, as well as Mike Donaldson from BillboardPlanet.
The event was mostly attended by attendees from Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, and there was a larger number of delegates from South America. Many of whom I’d met at ALOOH, including Guillermo De Lella and my friends from the Taggify team. I also felt blessed to spend time and meet counterparts in the measurement space, including Neil Eddleston, Gideon Adey, Rachana Lokhande, Denise Turner, Jorja Wilkins, Angie Cutter, the famous Daewon Kim, and Remco Dolman.
We all missed Kym Frank, Amanda Dorenberg, and Dylan Mabin. For those that haven’t made the list, my apologies, but OOH Today has a word cap on these articles, so I can’t mention everyone!
The content was also a major highlight, and it was incredible to see the success of OOH across so many global markets. A couple of stats that stood out were Australia’s Digital OOH market share being over 70%. In China, traditional media only accounts for 15% of advertising revenue, with OOH representing 8% of that. So, over 50% of all traditional media in China is OOH. Visuals from the China OOH market showcased incredible innovation across large-format and buildingscapes being choreographed together. Hopefully, we get some of this in North America!
The final highlight was the location. For those that haven’t been to Hong Kong, add it to your list. The people were extremely friendly/helpful, the nightlife put Toronto to shame, and the food was terrific, including a karaoke dinner with Vincent Lam of Asiaray that took 10 of us on a special boat ride, a tour of a live fish market, and a seafood dinner. It was a very special night that I will never forget – Thank you!
The day the conference ended, we moved to a new hotel on the other side of Victoria Bay. We experienced the Hong Kong Festival of Lights, which included a choreographic OOH light show across the harbor. It is a spectacle not to miss.
It was really terrific seeing everyone and experiencing a unique culture. Make sure you include the next World OOH conference in Mexico on your Event list for 2025! I’ll be there with Mobilytics Maple Syrup for those who get the reference!
