Friday Fast Fact – OOH in New Mexico: The State by Numbers

by Brian SchopperMarketing Manager, Geopath

For today’s Fast Fact, let’s take a look at some OOH statistics across the 33 counties of New Mexico!

Across the state, there is quite a swing in county populations sizes. Bernalillo County, where the state’s most-populous city Albuquerque is located, has a population of 676,444 people, according to the 2020 Census. From that same Census, only 624 residents reside in Harding County, which is the state’s least-populous county. In fact, Harding County is the 13th least-populated county in the entire country!

New Mexico, like much of the American Southwest, experiences and contains multiple forest fires/wildfires each year. In fact, a 17,000-acre forest fire in 1950, the “Capitan Gap Fire”, led to the popularization of a now-iconic figure: Smokey Bear. A small black bear cub (originally called “Hotfoot Teddy”) was rescued from the fire, and was soon renamed “Smokey”, after the Smokey Bear ad campaign being run by the US Forest Service. The young cub soon became intricately tied with the campaign’s message of fire safety, and helped boost the popularity of the Smokey Bear campaign immensely.

It is because of little Smokey that New Mexico deemed the American black bear the state’s official mammal!
