StoryCorps Launches “NYC Stories” Campaign on LinkNYC Screens

Amber Larkinsby Amber Larkins, OOH Today

This summer and fall, StoryCorps is launching a new campaign titled “NYC Stories.”  The campaign highlights and celebrates everyday New Yorkers’ diverse and vibrant lives.  The campaign leverages over 4,000 LinkNYC screens positioned across more than 3,200 blocks in all five city boroughs, connecting with audiences in their daily environment.

StoryCorps is a nonprofit organization. They have collected stories from nearly 700,000 people, including numerous award-winning oral history projects. Their projects are preserved in its archive at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

“LinkNYC’s vast network of kiosks, spanning over 3,200 blocks in all five boroughs, provides a unique and powerful platform to share these stories with a wide audience,” said Esther Rafael, Intersection’s Chief Marketing Officer.

Stories include bus operators, Broadway performers, and even an accountant-turned-salmon-slicer. These personal narratives will be shared with millions.

“Residents and visitors alike are already looking to LinkNYC screens for updates on subway times or the latest headlines, and they’re likely to linger a bit longer on an intriguing piece of content, like a glimpse into the life of a lifelong New Yorker,” Rafael said.

She says that because consumers are already primed to engage with their screens in this way, there is a secondary benefit to advertisers whose messaging runs between our editorial content.

Each NYC Story teaser features custom URLs that take users to the whole story. StoryCorps provides content to Intersection for display on LinkNYC, which helps to power Intersection’s editorial content program.

The campaign is running in two phases: the initial selection of stories from Story Corps were featured from July 1 to July 31st. A second selection of stories will appear on LinkNYC screens in September.
